Stripping

SEAVAC provides stripping (coating removal) for both CVD and PVD coatings. Removing old coating decreases delamination (peeling) and other coating adhesion issues. Removal is performed by one of two methods: liquid stripping and shot stripping.

Liquid stripping is ideal for stripping most coatings from most metals (except carbide). The length of this method varies, depending on coating type.

Shot stripping uses media to remove coating from the surface.

Stripping Carbide

Liquid stripping is not suitable for removing coating from carbide tooling. The liquid stripping compound reacts poorly to carbide, causing structural weakness in the material. SEAVAC can strip carbide with our shot stripping method, but we limit this service to dies and punches.

For carbide cutting tools, we recommend regrinding the coating surface to remove any existing layer of coating and to sharpen the tool.
